In 2020, as the medical world grappled with unprecedented disruption and clinical isolation, Professor Dr. Aurangzeb Shaikh gathered four fellow ophthalmologists in Pakistan into a dedicated WhatsApp messaging group. Their immediate goal was modest: share challenging fundus photographs, debate ambiguous corneal findings, and provide rapid second opinions for complex patient presentations.
What emerged astonished everyone involved. Within weeks, the conversation transcended informal chat. The group quickly adopted a structured methodology for reviewing clinical encounters: History → Slit-lamp Examination → Investigations → Differential Debate → Definitive Management → Core Learning Points.
The Founding Group of Five
A small educational initiative brought five ophthalmologists together in Pakistan to share knowledge through WhatsApp. The ethos was mutual respect: no question was too basic, and no clinical opinion was shielded from constructive academic inquiry.
Learning Beyond the Classroom

From Discussion to Curriculum
Recognizing the need for structured academic continuity, the leadership instituted thematic monthly lecture series, structured postgraduate exam revision modules (FCPS, FRCS, ICO), and evidence-based clinical case repositories.
Simulation: Learning by Doing
Cognitive knowledge was paired with procedural competence. The academy integrated surgical wet-lab simulation concepts, video-guided micro-surgical dissection, and planned virtual clinical decision-making simulations.
Building the Global Academy
The WhatsApp Academy model crystallized into the World Academy of Ophthalmic Education (WAOO) — a formal international institution bridging Pakistan to global ophthalmic scholarship.
Today, WAOO continues to preserve the warm, non-hierarchical, immediate accessibility of that first group chat while building the academic infrastructure of a world-class academy.
